Rule Sheet 2 ePortfolio Post 3

Our game for this project is an educational space game targeted towards 6 to 12 year old's. To start our designing process, my partner and I did a brainstorming session to come up with the basics of our game. We fairly quickly came up with a game that includes a board with stars and planets that the players move between. The board will be our solar system. Our next question was how do we make it educational? We came up with the idea to implement trivia cards that the players must get correct to advance. Each planet will have a stack of cards, when a player lands on the planet they must pick a card and answer it correctly to advance. We wrote down our notes as we brainstormed and even drew out a very rough board so that we could visualize it. To finish the brainstorming session, we came up with the name “Space Explorers” and then came up with our plan for the first rule sheet.

For our first rule sheet, I found myself fairly quickly being the team lead of the project. My partner and I work well together yet we both decided that I would be the lead for this project, and I actually enjoy that role. We took the notes that we had taken for our game and ironed them out into our first rule sheet. Unlike my last partner, my new partner and I did not meet in person, but instead we did it separately. We found ourselves needing to come up with some more rules to have a complete game, so we came up with exactly what would happen if a player lands on a planet or special spot throughout the map. My partner also came up with the punishment if the player gets a trivia question wrong.

Some issues we encountered were:

  • How do we make it easy enough for a young age group yet still challenging?

  • How do we get the right amount of competition?

  • How do they decide which amount of challenge they want when they pick a card?

  • What happens when they get a challenge card wrong?

  • Make sure not to make it too much like Candyland.

Playtesting will be very helpful for this game. There are still some rules that we will not be fully confident in until we get some play in.

After rule sheet 1, we started making our board. We decided to make the board in photoshop. We also decided to split that work evenly since we both know how to use photoshop. My partner is very helpful when it comes to me asking if he would like to do some extra work when necessary. Once the board is complete, we will do some self playtests and really iron out the game fully.

For rule sheet 2, we found that we like a lot of rules and did not want to change many of them. We are keeping it simple so that we will not confuse some younger players. We agree that an over complicated game will bore and frustrate kids.

Overall, our game so far is looking like it has a bright future to be a well-rounded game. Later, we will smooth some rough edges and make sure it is a polished game. Playtesting is a must and we will make sure to do it soon and often.
